For six years I’ve been a devotee of the High-Intensity Interval Training classes at FLEXcity Fitness. Jenny Quinn and Trista Parisian are the owners and founders of Flex and constantly inspire me to push myself, grab heavier weights, crank up the speed on the treadmill, and pour myself into my family and my career like they do. I was excited to read about a typical day in the life of these two busy, badass, business-owning moms and friends. Enjoy (and let me know if you want to join me for a free class at Flex!)
On a typical Thursday morning one of us teaching the 6am and then we meet at our favorite coffee shop in Lansing, Strange Matter, at 7am.
Trista- Wake up to nurse new baby Savanna before heading out for the morning. I have a Perfect Bar, full glass of water and green juice on the drive in to studio. Jenny- doesn’t require any food until after coffee. I have been pregnant or nursing the last 5 years so I don’t require any extra time before I leave. We spend the morning working on all things related to our studio. So much more goes into owning the business than working out!
At Strange Matter Trista orders black coffee and Jenny has an oat milk vanilla latte. We use this time together to work on big picture items. We fit our workout in by either taking class or designing and testing a new workout. Jenny’s favorite on the go food are the Rebbel (plant based protein drink) banana nut and dark chocolate protein drink, Perfect Bar, and chocolate sea salt Rx bars. We often get smoothies from Juice Nation in downtown Lansing. We head home by early afternoon to give the kids lunch and put the littles down for nap. Trista has a 2 year old (Everett) and 7 month old (Savanna), and Jenny has a 4.5 year old (Ben) and 2 year old (Josephine).
Depending on the day and time of year we use nap time to work on administrative tasks. We make being home a priority so we fit in work as often as we can.We try to be as active as possible with our kids so the afternoon/evening normally consists of being outside (weather permitting). You can find us at the playground, riding bikes, going for a walk/run. Jenny has a pool so her kids are mermaids in the summer. Having little ones makes it challenging to tackle going out to eat so 90% of the time we make our dinners at home. Our favorites are super simple meals that typically take 20 minutes or less to prepare. Examples include stir frys, meals on the grill with protein/veggies, salads, etc. We live by the 80/20 rule, so we definitely have pizza nights or ice cream as a special treat.
After dinner the evening consists of more playtime, baths, 30 min of TV, books for bedtime. Jenny’s kids are in bed around 8:30pm while Trista’s are down around (7:30pm for Savanna and 9:30pm Everett). After kids are down typically we use that time to catch up on work items and any clean the house from having toddlers. If there is any time Jenny’s current favorite shows are Billions, Game of Thrones, Big Little Lies, she and her husband (Mark) are binge watching The Office (for the 200th time). Trista and husband (Nick) try to head to bed as soon as kids are down since life with a 2 year old and a 7 month you never know what will happen in the night.
Something Jenny is trying to do everyday is write in her journal. With two kids and two studios life can be crazy but this helps keep things organized. Trista is in the stage of life where it is challenging to read books so she loves to listen to podcasts. The quote “the days are long but the years are short” is so so true. Having a job we love and the flexibility to be home as much as possible makes work life balance possible. We want to be strong role models to our kids both at home and professionally.
At 6am class on Tuesday I found myself next to Trista on the treadmill, and there’s nothing like being right next to the studio owner to give you an extra boost of motivation! Thanks for sharing your day, ladies, and for creating an incredible atmosphere and community at Flex.
