For more than ten years, I’ve been going to book club. Once a month, a gaggle of girlfriends and I get together and discuss what’s happening in our lives, who is getting a new job, what we’ve been eating, who is pregnant, what shows and movies we are loving, and yes, we discuss the book. Most of the time.
One of the things that I love the most about book club is hearing recommendations from my friends. Maybe they have a new skin care product that has made all the difference, or they found a new kind of formula that solved their baby’s reflux, or they went to a new restaurant in town and they loved the pork chop. After I realized how much I enjoy hearing these tips and how much I love giving them, I decided that I would put my ramblings where my mouth is and start a blog.
Topknot is going to be the place where I tell you about what we ate for dinner, and the protein ball recipe that I love the most after trying half a dozen different kinds. I’m going to show you where I ate in Traverse City, and Phoenix, and Paris. Do you have a baby who refuses to keep socks and shoes on his feet, even in the freezing cold winter weather? I have the solution (and man oh man, it is cute!)

To begin, I’m going to tell you about one of my favorite Lansing restaurants, Batter Up Bistro. From the fresh, beautiful, house-made baked goods and breads to the herby chicken salad to the lightly flavored, strong lattes, Batter Up is my absolute favorite restaurant for breakfast and lunch meetings in Lansing. When I’m not in the midst of completing a Whole30, as I am right now (more on that later), I can’t get enough of the wholesome, perfectly prepared oatmeal.
To kick us off in style, Batter Up Bistro has generously donated a $25 gift certificate to a Topknot reader. To enter, just comment on this post with your email and what your favorite breakfast food is. For a second entry, share on social media and leave a second comment with a link to your post. The giveaway concludes on Tuesday, January 22.

French toast. You can’t go wrong with a thick piece of bread drowning in real maple syrup. Toss in a dusting of powdered sugar. Take or leave the bacon, just gimme the carbs and sugar!
100% eggs benedict with hollandaise sauce… lots and lots of hollandaise sauce.
A goat cheese omelette and/or a big ole waffle!
Breakfast burritos-green pepper, tomato, onion and cheese with salsa and sour cream.
Anything that includes Ham Sweet Farm bacon or breakfast sausage.
Cuban Eggs Benedict!!!!
Mascarpone stuffed French toast with cherrywood smoked, thick cut bacon. Such an epic combo!
Or, overnight orange zest and Grand Marnier soaked French toast with brioche bread. So Delicious!
Also I do appreciate a fluffy omelette, Denver style to be exact. I always ask for the green bell pepper and onions to be sautéed, as I feel that the flavors are more intense. It’s funny that a simple pairing of peppers and onions can be so mouth watering.
These are my favorite breakfast dishes!
Quiche, sour dough toast and of course coffee!
Omelette with spinach, feta, tomato and mushrooms. I would eat this for every meal if I could!
Any kind of egg and veggie scramble!
I love a gooey, icing covered cinnamon roll!

I totally go for Belgium waffles when I don’t have to make them. When I want protein I go for a veggie omelet.
2 pieces of white toast slathered in peanut butter stuffed with 4 pieces of bacon. Yum yum! Just curious as to why previous comments are showing as today’s date but 11:08 – 11:53 PM when it’s only a little after 7:00? (I would make a good detective).
Eggs Benedict, hands down. It’s complex enough that I don’t want to tackle it at home, but those runny eggs with the magical Hollandaise is THE BEST.
Butter croissant 🥐 with a strong (but not charred-tasting) flat white. So happy to see this Gabe!
MIGAS. 4 SHO.
Bulletproof coffee + 2 eggs over medium + a side of veggie hash
Oatmeal with fresh blueberries
A big meaty omelette with avocado 🥑
Creative benedicts or florentines, such as crab cakes in place of boring English muffins or asparagus instead of spinach. Or interesting hash combinations, such as turkey and sweet potatoes. Go for it! btw, your breakfast sandwich and side potatoes are amazing!!
A latte and a bacon & cheddar scone ❤️
Perfectly toasted bagel with schmear and fresh lox, salty capers, and just a couple of slices of pickled red onion. Yum!! Poached egg is nice with it too when you need to be extra lux!
